Larsen C ice sheet breaking up?

Rising sea level is becoming an even  greater threat amongst all the problems with climate change. Most of the big ice sheets have very few records because they are so inaccessible but, despite their size,
they are very sensitive to minute changes in temperature and yet they are vital to our lifestyle and civilisation.

Research by D. JANSEN, B. KULESSA, P.R. SAMMONDS, A. LUCKMAN, E.C. KING, N.F. GLASSER has uncovered a disturbing situation.

Picture
West Antarctica is a huge ice sheet held in position by a string of islands and as it projects into the Southern Ocean, towards South America, it is vulnerable to the changing temperature of wind and water.

Picture
Larsen A and B have already collapsed and now a large crack has appeared in Larsen C. If this crack progresses on its trajectory it would break off an estimated 6400 Sq Km or 12% of the ice sheet or it may take a shorter route and release 9%

Picture
The problem appears to be that, In common with many other ice sheets, warmer ocean water is melting the ice from below and detaching the ice from its grounding line making it vulnerable to breaking and also melting from above due to an increase in wind patterns.
These Antarctic ice sheets are vitally important to the rate of sea level rise because, although this ice is already in the water and will not in itself add to the rise, it is holding back the glaciers from the land-ice and past history shows that when this buttressing by the sea ice disappears the land ice speeds up its journey to the sea.
Everyone will be looking at Larsen C, especially as the Pine Island ice sheet is also melting rapid from below and is in terminal decline.

Who knows what else is happening in this hard to reach region?
This video helps explain some of the problems.

Thanks for that interesting update on West Antarctica, which is reinforced by Associated Press with the title "Antarctica's retreating ice may re-shape Earth" appearing in yesterday's physorg.

The PDO index has been at a record high for the last 2 months and has been positive for just over a year, Prof Kevin Trenberth believes that the so called hiatus is likely over now and we should start seeing sharper rises. Should be an interesting year leading up to the COP21 conference in Paris (30 November to 11 December 2015).

Larsen C ice sheet breaking up is the wake up call that everyone needs. It goes to show how we are slowly destroying the planet Earth. Many people are still in denial that it is our fault why the Earth is becoming more and more polluted. We cannot seem to accept the fact that we are the main reason why we are not on the verge of having a climate change. We must do something about this problem or else we will regret it for the rest of our lives.

The American and British media are committed to protecting the oil and coal companies but the rest of the world knows what is happening and is getting with the changes. It's not good but it's not all bad.

Thanks for those leads Bob. Its a worry that so many distinguished scientists are voicing their concerns, Kevin Trenberth is a Kiwi so I always look out for his comments.

I used to be like you many years ago but have since matured and investigated the subject exhaustively. Myself and everyone that I am connected with are totally convinced that MMCC is a total con. Do you receive any grants? Thought so

What a pathetic attempt at denial. The USA has wasted thirty years protecting it coal and oil companies and it will prove to be a very expensive mistake.

What a pathetic attempt at being an ideological green wanker.
Good cheap clean energy is what the world needs and we have an abundance of it . The last thing that sane people need is some green loony to tell them how to live. Grow up.
I deal in facts not bullshit. If Co2 was a pollutant and not a gas of life you may have some point to your green argument but you don't. How is that grant going - thought so.

Not heard of any climate related entities with the initials of MMCC, think you must mean NIPCC, agreed that is a total con

How can people still deny that part of the warming and change is due to man’s industrial CO2 emissions, after listening to Prof Richard Alley's elevator talk ?…

Anti aircraft missiles are calibrated taking into account the laws of physics and IR disruption further more there has been recent empirical evidence.

Some people just enjoy arguing for the sake of it and give a pretense that they know better, do they not care that lives are being ruined and lost. Anything they can not understand they resort to abusive language and politics.

Bob you are hopelessly out of your depth. Termites produce more Co2 than the miniscule amounts that humans produce. You are ideologically driven (you would not be a greenie would you) only.
Unfortunately for the alarmists there is way too much conflicting reporting happening which only proves the desperation of the prolification of the scam. Anyone with an ounce of intelligence would conduct their own research on the subject to form an opinion based on scientific fact. People who pollute the gullible with environmental religion are a disgrace. Goodbye.

No I am certainly not a "Greenie" I been through (and past with distinction) University courses under professional tutors, that is Professor R.B Alley at Penn State and Dr David Archer at Chicago University. I have no interest at all in politics or conservation at all. My interest is solely in science. I have heard that termite story many years ago. I have discussed it with people before such as the astrologer Ken Ring, in the end if someone thinks they know more than our best climatologists and paleo-climatoligists then I am probably wasting my time debating it. I suspect it is the Dunning–Kruger effect or some other cognitive dissonance disorder.

Even Anthony Watts in his Heartland group sponsored WUWT recognizes the IR blocking effect of CO2, he just disagrees with climate models and predictive methods.

CO2 molecules vibrate and block outgoing radiation, Svente Arrhenious worked out the equation in 1896. It is a physical law of science.

This person who calls himself Peter is the third denier that has visited this site so I am very proud that my efforts have been noticed by the fossil fuel industry and I am becoming a problem to them.

Hi,
your web page is not usable. It feels like it was made in 1990. E.g. the main text takes merely 50% of the width, the other 50% are just EMPTY. The statement at the bottom "Proudly powered by Weebly" is not serious. It is not professional. Shame on Weebly.

Regards,
